Light and Shade - Dramatic shade

Light and shade can be used to increase the impact of a photo. Just like in the darkroom the image can be dodged and burned, the contrast increased or decreased. Elements can be introduced to add meaning or convey a message such as in advertising.

A powerful image (see right) can be created using shade to illustrate the swallowing up of the landscape by the continuing construction of factories and retail parks that pop up out of nowhere seemingly overnight. It was created simply by adding a looming shadow over the landscape
