Ambient Images, colourised historic moments with immersive soundscapes

Ambient images: Reconnect with the past by immersing yourself into the moment

Ambient Images: You all know I love nostalgia. Often spend my days scanning and restoring my clients’ treasured memories. Days spent painstakingly removing the ravages of time or accidental damage to return photographs to their original, pristine condition. I don’t always stop there. Often I spend time digitally recolouring old black and white photos. When taking on such projects, I always go to great lengths to ensure historical accuracy, often seeking out old postcards and other images, written references, location-specific flora and geological details as a reference. When done well, this technique can considerably enhance the original, making it easier for the observer to relate to the image before them.

 

The soundscapes.

 

To enhance the sensory experience even further, I have begun, on this personal project, adding subtle sound and video effects to some previously restored and intricately colourised photographs. I call these new creations “ambient images.” The use of intriguing stereo soundscapes and subtle pan and zoom effects draws you in, transporting you through time and space and immersing you for a few magical moments in an audible and visual tapestry. Nostalgia at its finest! Check out some examples below…

A gentle sea caresses the shoreline whilst folk enjoy a day at the beach.

At the banana docks, traders sell fruit whilst the steamships and horses add to the hustle and bustle.

Native birds and insects set the scene whilst the steamboat drops off a picnic party.

Two young cyclists watch a steam train rattle past over the embankment.

Young boys get a chance for a swim from an old wooden jetty.

      Good luck. I enjoyed spending time researching native birds and birdsong that would be present and the authentic steamer sounds from the correct time period. If you need help with the colouring let me know 🙂
